Why a Robotic Lawn Mower?
Our first ever robotic lawn mower was the Husqvarna Automower 450X and boy was it fantastic. Along with purchase, the boundary wires were installed throughout the property, and everything was controlled from my phone via the app.
But — times have changed. And for the better.
Robotic lawn mowers are way more advanced now, prices are competitive, and there’s just so many to choose from that are in the current market.
Having several years of experience with our Automower, I know exactly what to look for and can’t wait to share the best options for you.

No More Boundary Wires
Say goodbye to the dreadful boundary wires. Luckily for us they were installed by an amazing crew (included with purchase) but in the end, they were a complete nightmare. With a large property that is quite complex like ours, you won’t want the hassle.
Too many times we had a broken line somewhere on our property edge and it took forever to figure out where the break was. With large properties, grown in grass and dirt can easily cover the perimeter wires, making it difficult to find the breakage.
Not only that, but literally anything could cause the breakage — like chipmunks, moles, dogs digging, or from snow plowing or shovelling. You name it, a snap was bound to happen. Luckily, no wires are needed with the newest models.
Wire-Free Virtual Mapping
The newer robotic lawn mowers actually use a satellite GPS system to set it and forget it, allowing you to mark down in the app exactly where you want the mower to cut—virtually.
Set your own property zone coverages (like front yard being Zone A and backyard being Zone B) and control all of it through an app. Set your own schedule times and cut where you need it to.
Many of the newer models use satellite or GPS tracking with anti-theft technology so that you’ll know exactly where your unit is at all times. Most are equipped with an alarm and can be tracked down always.

Robotic Lawn Mowers for Large Properties
If you have more than half an acre of grass to cut and want as little maintenance as possible, a robotic lawn mower is for you. These models specifically can handle covering more acres of land per charge, with weather resistance, anti-theft features, and ai object detection.
They are super safe around children and pets, and can handle rough terrain like bumps, tree roots, and even the legs of a trampoline. Something our previous mower simply just could not handle. The wheels would frequently wobble or break, and it would bump into things while getting confused and spinning in circles.
These new mowers on the other hand, are equipped with AI functionality, able to detect objects, and have much better maneuverability thanks to upgraded wheels (and some with even tank-like treads) with excellent traction.

Efficiency and Battery Life
When it comes to bigger properties with more lawn to cover, you’ll want a robotic lawn mower with an efficient battery with a lot of juice to power it. The longer the battery will run, the more lawn coverage in one charge. That’s the goal.
Before buying, try to calculate as best as you can your yard square footage and then check the specs of the lawn mower making sure it’s capable of covering your area. If it’s needing a charge every so often, it may not be able to complete your property on time as desired.
For example, many of the newer high end models are capable of covering multiple lawn sections and over 1 acre of land in a single charge. That’s a lot of coverage!
