This high protein & low carb hot chocolate is a sugar free, festive hot cocoa that’s quick and easy, made with an electric frother and vanilla protein powder.

Homemade Protein Powder Hot Chocolate
This smooth and creamy hot chocolate is quick to make on cold winter days. The high protein content will keep you full, aid in muscle recovery and nourish the body with necessary amino acids.
You’ll love that this involves a few ingredients including vanilla whey protein powder and rich cocoa full of antioxidants for good health.
How Much Protein Should I Consume in a Day?
For women, it is recommended to get at least 100-150g of protein in each and every day. Not only does it help manage blood sugar spikes when eating it first thing in the morning (like scrambled eggs instead of something sweet) it also keeps you feeling full for easier weight management.
The amino acids from protein powder helps with hair growth, mental health and clarity, building lean muscle and faster muscle recovery. It give you energy for your day and for workouts, but can be enjoyed before or after physical activity.
Here is a general equation of how much protein to consume for women:
Sedentary lifestyle: weight (in kg) x 0.8
Active lifestyle: weight (in kg) x 2.8

Dairy Free Options That Are Low Carb
Instead of using heavy cream if you may have a dairy allergy or intolerance, you can easily sub in a creamy almond milk or coconut milk which are both low carb options.
You could also mix heavy cream with almond milk if you enjoy a hot chocolate that is especially creamy, without getting the sugars/carbs from regular dairy milk. Or use coconut milk. Lately, I’ve been buying A2 milk and trying it out for the kids and I to see if it helps with better digestion, although it is not considered low in natural sugar.
More Hot Chocolate Variations to Try
In this recipe, I used vanilla protein powder and cocoa, but you could use a chocolate protein powder and then add a splash of vanilla extract for flavour which is optional.
Cinnamon is also amazing flavour to add, which is also beneficial for managing blood sugar and adds a bit a sweetness on its own.
For the whipped topping, you can whip up your own using heavy cream and a 0 carb sweetener like stevia, or finds sugar free whipped cream in the store.
